Abstract

One of the most frequent musculoskeletal injuries in sportsmen, in particular in sport where speed is involved and quick changes in directions are observed, is hamstring strain injuries. The high recurrence rates explain why effective and evidence-based rehabilitation strategies must be implemented. In this review, the existing rehabilitation principles to hamstring strain injury are considered with an emphasis on open kinetic chain and closed kinetic chain strengthening exercises and their importance at various stages of the healing process. Combination of adjunctive modalities such as blood flow restrictive therapy is also addressed. There is even evidence that a phase-specific, personalized type of rehabilitation involving both isolated and functional strengthening is the most effective way to maximize recovery, improve neuromuscular control, and minimize the risk of reinjury, which is safe to allow a player to resume playing.
